Description
INS Vaghsheer was commissioned at Naval Dockyard Mumbai on 15 January 2025, completing the six-boat Kalvari-class programme built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders under licence from Naval Group. The diesel-electric attack submarine displaces about 1,600 tonnes surfaced and carries heavyweight torpedoes and SM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles. Named after a deep-sea predator, she is the second Indian submarine to bear the name, the first having served from 1974 to 1997. Her commissioning alongside Surat and Nilgiri marked the first time India inducted a destroyer, a frigate and a submarine on the same day.
