Description
The Project 23550 Arctic patrol icebreaker Purga was struck by long-range Ukrainian drones at the Vyborg Shipyard in Leningrad region during the night of 24-25 March 2026, more than 1,000 kilometres from the front line. Imagery showed the ship listing heavily to port with her hull leaning against the nearby research vessel Vice-Admiral Burilichev. Laid down in July 2020 and launched in October 2022, Purga was still fitting out and had not entered service. She is being built for the Coast Guard of the Border Service of the FSB, and the 8,500-tonne design combines patrol ship, tug and icebreaker roles for year-round Arctic operations.
