Australia Navy Upgraded Mogami-class Ordered

The Australian and Japanese governments and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries signed the contract for the first three Upgraded Mogami general-purpose frigates for the Royal Australian Navy on 18 April 2026, Naval News reported. The three ships will be built in Japan, with first delivery due in 2029, before construction shifts to the Henderson Defence Precinct in Western Australia for the rest of a class planned at up to 11 ships under project SEA 3000. The budget was raised to A$15-20 billion over 2026-2035 from an earlier A$7-10 billion estimate, and the government called it the Navy's fastest peacetime acquisition, according to the same report.
