Upgraded Mogami-class (New FFM)

The New FFM, designated 06FFM and also known as the Upgraded Mogami, is a class of frigates planned for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The class replaces a portion of the originally planned Mogami-class (30FFM) production run. In January 2023, the Japanese Defense Acquisition Agency initiated the procurement process for the new design. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) was selected as the main supplier, with Japan Marine United (JMU) serving as subcontractor.

The New FFM features a stealth-design hull that is longer and wider than the Mogami class, with a modified bridge structure and the omission of the stealth shear seen on the predecessor class. The propulsion system uses a Combined Diesel and Gas (CODAG) arrangement, consisting of a gas turbine and two diesel engines driving conventional screw propellers. For shipboard systems, the class incorporates a multi-function radar based on the OPY-2 equipped with a missile guidance illuminator, a fire control network, and a multi-function sonar for vessel and mine detection. A Palfinger slipway system is fitted at the stern.

Weapon configurations vary by operator. Japanese vessels carry Type 23 ship-to-air missiles, Type 07 anti-submarine missiles, and the ship-board version of the Type 12 surface-to-ship missile. Vertically launched weapons are housed in a Mark 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS). The Australian variant uses the Kongsberg Naval Strike Missile, RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile, SeaRAM, and Mark 54 lightweight torpedoes. The Australian ships will be powered by Rolls-Royce gas turbines.

The first Japanese vessels are scheduled for commissioning in 2028. Installation of the VLS on the lead Japanese vessel was reported in April 2025. In August 2025, the Australian government selected the design to replace its Anzac-class frigates, with the first vessel scheduled for commissioning in 2030. The first three Australian vessels are under contract for construction by MHI in Japan, with subsequent units planned for domestic assembly at the Australian Marine Complex.

The design has been proposed for several export markets. In April 2026, Japan offered the frigate under license production to India. In May 2026, the New Zealand Ministry of Defence named the Upgraded Mogami as one of two contenders to replace its Anzac-class frigates. Additionally, Taiwanese media reported in April 2026 that the Republic of China Navy was considering the design to replace its Kang Ding-class and Cheng Kung-class frigates.
