Description

The decommissioned BRP Magat Salamat was sunk as a SINKEX target off the western coast of northern Luzon on 8 May 2026, the second day of a multinational maritime strike drill during Exercise Balikatan 2026. Philippine Air Force FA-50PH Fighting Eagles and A-29 Super Tucanos struck the hulk with Mark 82 bombs and AGM-65 Maverick air-to-ground missiles. The exercise involved integrated Philippine, U.S., Japanese and Canadian sensors and strike assets, following the sinking of sister exercise target BRP Quezon on the first day. The vessel had been out of active service since its December 2021 decommissioning, so the sinking removes no additional hull from the current fleet count.
