Description

Portugal's Ministry of National Defence signed an agreement with Italy in Rome on 20 July 2026 for the acquisition of three FREMM EVO multi-role frigates for the Portuguese Navy. The vessels, to be built by Fincantieri, represent an investment of approximately 3.9 billion euros financed under the EU's SAFE (Security Action for Europe) instrument, with deliveries planned between 2029 and 2030. The agreement covers maintenance, technology transfer and life-cycle support for at least 30 years. The FREMM EVO is the latest evolution of the Italian FREMM design, and the ships are expected to replace the Portuguese Navy's ageing Vasco da Gama-class frigates.
