Description

India's first Multi-Purpose Vessel, Samarthak, was delivered to the Indian Navy by Larsen & Toubro at its Kattupalli shipyard near Chennai on 27 August 2026. Over 75 percent of the 3,750-tonne, 107-metre ship's content is indigenous. Conceived primarily as a weapons and sensor trials platform, Samarthak also carries a 76mm gun, torpedo tubes and an anti-submarine rocket launcher, and can operate a Dhruv helicopter, giving it a secondary patrol and disaster-relief role. A sister vessel, Utkarsh, was launched under the same two-ship contract in January 2025.
