Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, the Fincantieri-Leonardo joint venture, signed a contract with the European procurement agency OCCAR on 24 September 2026 for two DDX destroyers for the Italian Navy, Fincantieri announced. The contract is worth about 3.7 billion euros, of which roughly 1.3 billion euros are options, with deliveries planned in 2033 and 2035. Described by Naval News as an evolution of the Horizon-class (Orizzonte) destroyers, the 180-metre, 13,500-tonne ships will carry the SADOC 5 combat system, a high-power S-band AESA radar and an MBDA weapon system for integrated air and missile defence, including against ballistic and hypersonic threats.
