Description

The Elettra (A 5340) is an Italian Navy signals intelligence (SIGINT) vessel designated as a Nuova Unità Polivalente di Supporto (NUPS). Designed for research and surveillance, the vessel's platform was developed from the NATO research vessel Alliance. Ordered in 1999, the ship was built by Fincantieri at the Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia. It was laid down in January 2001, launched in July 2002, and entered service in April 2003.

The vessel is equipped with electronic intelligence gear, including electronic and acoustic reconnaissance systems, an echo sounder, and a submersible remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV). For utility and aviation support, the ship features a rear flight deck configured for deploying unmanned aerial vehicles, deck cranes, a passive stabilization plant, and a compression chamber. Its sensor fit includes navigation radars, an electromagnetic ship log, and a three-band satellite terminal.

The propulsion system is based on two permanent magnet electric engines powered by diesel generators. The Elettra was the first surface vessel built to utilize this propulsion configuration, which is designed for low underwater radiated noise, reduced maintenance requirements, and reliability.

The Elettra is operated by the Italian Navy with its homeport at La Spezia. The vessel remains in active service.
