Description
The Harry DeWolf class is a series of offshore patrol vessels operated by the Royal Canadian Navy and planned for the Canadian Coast Guard. Developed under the Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship procurement project within Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy, the program commenced in July 2007. The design is modelled on the Norwegian Coast Guard vessel NoCGV Svalbard. In October 2011, Irving Shipbuilding was awarded the contract to construct the vessels at Halifax Shipyards. Initially planned as a class of six naval vessels, the Canadian government expanded the program in May 2019 to build two modified, unarmed variants for the Canadian Coast Guard, bringing the total planned class size to eight. Construction of the lead vessel, Harry DeWolf, began in September 2015.
The hull form features a rounded spoon-shaped stem optimized for bow-first icebreaking, rated to Polar Class 5 with the bow region strengthened to Polar Class 4. Propulsion is provided by a diesel-electric powertrain consisting of four MAN medium-speed diesel generators and two propulsion motors driving twin shafts. A bow thruster is integrated to assist with maneuvering. To reduce roll in open water, the vessels utilize retractable fin stabilizers. The design incorporates an enclosed cable deck and forecastle for cold-weather operations. The vessels can support multiple payloads, including shipping containers, landing craft, and underwater survey equipment, managed via onboard cranes and a vehicle bay. Navigation and surveillance systems include an integrated bridge, BlueNaute inertial navigation, a Thales Identification Friend or Foe system, and SCANTER 6002 and SharpEye radar systems. The Coast Guard variants feature a modified bridge layout, deck alterations, and accommodations for non-military crews.
The lead ship, Harry DeWolf, was commissioned on June 26, 2021, followed by Margaret Brooke in October 2022, Max Bernays in May 2024, and William Hall in May 2024. In December 2022, lead contamination was identified in the potable water systems of the first three completed vessels. Each naval vessel is assigned a formal affiliation with one of the six Inuit regions in Northern Canada to build community connections. In late 2023, personnel shortages limited crew availability, though by early 2024, the class conducted concurrent deployments, including Max Bernays transiting the Panama Canal and Margaret Brooke operating in the Caribbean Sea. Harry DeWolf and Margaret Brooke subsequently participated in the exercise Nanook 2024. The first Coast Guard variant, CCGS Donjek, was launched in 2026.
