Protector USV

The Protector USV was developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems of Israel following attacks on maritime assets such as the bombing of USS Cole, and was the first combat unmanned surface vehicle to enter operational service. The design is built around a 9-metre rigid-hulled inflatable boat fitted with a sealed, low-profile upper structure. In 2012 Rafael announced an 11-metre version with greater range and a broader weapons fit.

The hull is a deep V-shaped planing form, with the inflatable collar providing stability and endurance. A single diesel engine drives water jets. The Protector uses a modular payload arrangement, allowing the boat to be reconfigured for force protection, counter-terrorism, surveillance and reconnaissance, mine warfare and electronic warfare tasks.

Armament consists of the Mini-Typhoon stabilised weapon station. Sensors are centred on the TOPLITE electro-optic surveillance and targeting system, which combines a forward-looking infrared sensor, a digital CCD surveillance camera and a laser rangefinder for day and night targeting. Navigation equipment comprises radar, GPS and an inertial navigation system. A public address system is fitted for hailing vessels of interest.

The Protector is remotely controlled, with a commander and operator stationed either ashore or aboard a manned vessel. This arrangement allows the craft to approach and inspect suspect vessels while personnel and larger ships remain at a distance.

The Republic of Singapore Navy deployed the Protector to the northern Persian Gulf in 2005 in support of coalition forces, operating the craft alongside its Endurance-class landing platform docks during peacekeeping operations. There the boats carried out surveillance, reconnaissance and force protection sorties lasting more than eight hours. Singapore later employed the type on anti-piracy duties in the Gulf of Aden.

In 2006, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin and Rafael demonstrated the Protector's force protection capabilities to the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard and other maritime security agencies at the United States Special Operations Command trade show in Tampa Bay, Florida. The demonstration was conducted in connection with the Littoral Combat Ship and Integrated Deepwater System programmes.

The Protector is operated by the Israeli Navy, the Republic of Singapore Navy and the Mexican Navy. Unit cost has been reported at approximately US$3,175,000.
