Description
The Spartan Scout is an unmanned surface vehicle developed by the United States under the Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration program. Development of the system began in 2001, and the initial demonstration took place in late 2003. The United States Navy subsequently planned a larger variant of the vessel.
The craft is a rigid-hull inflatable boat capable of autonomous or semi-autonomous operation. Although it requires a two-man crew for initial deployment, the vehicle operates without personnel onboard once deployed. Its design incorporates surface search radar as well as electro-optical and infrared surveillance sensors.
During its demonstration deployment, the vessel was configured for surface surveillance and force protection. The platform's design allows for reconfiguration to support alternative mission profiles.
