Description
The Qahir Al Amwaj is a corvette built by VT Group in the United Kingdom for the Royal Navy of Oman. It is the lead ship of the Qahir class, developed under Project Muheet. The Omani government placed the order for the vessel on 5 April 1992, and construction began in September 1992. The ship was laid down on 17 May 1993, launched on 21 September 1994, and commissioned on 3 September 1996.
The design of the vessel incorporates features to reduce its radar cross-section, including the cladding of surfaces with radar-absorbent material and the use of angled sides on both the hull and superstructure. The propulsion system consists of diesel engines driving shafts. The ship’s sensor suite includes air and surface search radar, navigation radar, and dedicated fire control systems for radar and optical tracking. The vessel is equipped with a main gun, secondary cannons, a surface-to-air missile launcher, and anti-ship missiles.
The Qahir Al Amwaj serves in the Royal Navy of Oman. Ships of this class participate in international maritime training, including exercises with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
