Description
The Type 901 class is a group of fast combat support ships operated by the People's Liberation Army Navy of China. The design carries the NATO reporting name Fuyu class and is also referred to as the Hulunhu class. In Chinese service the type is designated 901型综合补给舰, or comprehensive supply ship.
The Type 901 is driven by four QC280 gas turbines, each rated at 28 MW (38,000 hp), giving a maximum speed of about 25 knots. That speed allows the ships to operate alongside aircraft carriers and their escorts. The Type 901 is more than twice the size of the preceding Type 903A replenishment ship and is faster.
The role assigned to the Type 901 is comparable to that of the United States Navy's Supply-class fast combat support ships, namely the underway replenishment of large surface action groups with fuel, ammunition and stores.
