Description

The M-84 is a Yugoslav main battle tank developed by the Military Technical Institute in Belgrade between 1979 and 1983. Based on the Soviet T-72M, the vehicle entered service in 1985. Production was centralized at the Đuro Đaković facility in Croatia, utilizing components from across the Yugoslav republics. The design improved upon the base Soviet model through the integration of domestic fire-control systems, upgraded composite armor, and increased engine power.

The primary armament consists of a 125mm smoothbore gun derived from the Soviet 2A46, featuring a thermal coating to minimize barrel deformation. An automatic loading system enables a sustained rate of fire and reduces the crew to three: commander, gunner, and driver. Ammunition is stowed in the hull beneath the turret. Secondary armament includes a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7mm anti-aircraft gun. Modernized variants, such as the Serbian M-84AS2, incorporate remote-controlled weapon stations and stabilized panoramic sights for hunter-killer operations.

Armor protection includes cast steel and laminate components. The M-84A variant introduced a non-metal segment between steel turret layers and additional plating on the glacis. Modernization packages have added explosive reactive armor (ERA), slat armor, and soft-kill active protection systems designed to disrupt laser-guided munitions. The vehicle is powered by a V-12 diesel engine and utilizes a torsion bar suspension. It is equipped with nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protection and a snorkel for deep fording.

The M-84 is operated by several countries, including Serbia, Croatia, Kuwait, Slovenia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It saw combat during the Persian Gulf War with the Kuwaiti 35th Al-Shaheed Armored Brigade. During the Yugoslav Wars, the tank was deployed in Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In these conflicts, its frontal armor proved effective against anti-tank threats, though side and rear penetrations occasionally resulted in ammunition detonations. Croatia recently donated a number of units to Ukraine, where they are utilized by mechanized brigades in the Russo-Ukrainian War. Serbian modernization efforts continue, with the M-84AS2 entering serial production to serve as a platoon commander vehicle.
