Patria AMV
Description
The Patria AMV (Armoured Modular Vehicle) is an 8x8 multi-role military vehicle developed by the Finnish company Patria. The program originated from a 1995 Finnish Army investigation into armored vehicle concepts, leading to development in 1996 to replace the 6x6 Sisu Pasi. A prototype was completed in 2001, and serial production commenced in 2004. The design was developed using 3D virtual environments and incorporated experience from previous armored vehicle operations.
The vehicle utilizes a modular architecture, allowing for the integration of different turrets, weapon systems, sensors, and communications equipment on a common chassis. It is available in three main configurations: a basic platform for roles such as personnel transport, reconnaissance, and ambulance service; a high roof platform for command, control, and workshop functions; and a heavy weapon platform designed for heavy mortar and gun systems. Protection features include a frontal arc resistant to 30mm APFSDS rounds and mine protection capable of withstanding explosions of 10 kilograms of TNT. Mobility is supported by independent hydropneumatic suspension that adjusts each wheel individually. An upgraded version, the AMV XP, was introduced in 2013 to provide increased payload and protection.
The Patria AMV has been widely exported and is operated by several countries, including Finland, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia, Sweden, Slovakia, and the United Arab Emirates. It is produced under license in Poland as the KTO Rosomak, in South Africa as the Badger, and in Croatia and Japan. Polish forces deployed the vehicle to Afghanistan starting in 2007, where steel-composite armor sets were utilized to resist RPG-7 attacks. Slovenian units also operated the vehicle in Afghanistan from 2010. Additional deployments include the European Union mission in Chad and use by the United Arab Emirates in operations in Yemen. Polish-produced variants entered service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2023 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
