Overview
The Chilean Air Force (Fuerza Aรฉrea de Chile, FACh) is a professional and technologically advanced service within the context of Latin America. Its structure is organized around three primary commands: Combat, Logistics, and Personnel. Operationally, the force is divided into five air brigades distributed geographically across the country, from Iquique in the north to Punta Arenas in the south, and includes a base in Antarctica. These brigades contain various aviation groups, which are the fundamental flying units.
The core of Chile's air combat capability resides in its fleet of F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. These multirole fighters provide the FACh with significant offensive and defensive counter-air capabilities. The F-16s are supported by a range of other assets, including transport aircraft vital for logistical support over the country's long and challenging geography. This transport fleet includes C-130 Hercules, various Boeing aircraft, and smaller tactical transports. Additionally, the FACh operates tanker aircraft for aerial refueling, such as the KC-135 and KC-130R, and has acquired E-3D Sentry platforms to enhance its airborne early warning and control capabilities. A diverse helicopter fleet performs transport, liaison, and search-and-rescue (SAR) duties.
The strategic doctrine of the FACh is centered on the defense of national sovereignty and control of its airspace. Given Chile's low risk of conventional state-on-state conflict, its operational focus has increasingly shifted toward peacetime missions. These include extensive SAR responsibilities over a vast area of the Pacific Ocean and Antarctica, disaster relief, medical evacuation, and national development support. The force regularly participates in international joint exercises, such as Salitre, to maintain a high degree of interoperability with friendly nations.
The FACh is engaged in ongoing modernization, though some programs have faced economic headwinds. A key priority is the upgrade of its F-16 fleet, which has experienced delays. Another significant challenge is the replacement of its aging C-130 transport aircraft, a process that became more urgent following a fatal crash in 2019. The locally produced T-35 Pillรกn, a successful trainer aircraft, exemplifies Chile's domestic defense industry capability through the state-owned company ENAER. The incorporation of a new primary trainer, the Pillรกn II, is also a current focus.
