Description
Ching Chuan Kang Air Base (CCK) is a Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF) installation located in Taichung, Taiwan. The site originated as Kōkan Airport, built in 1936 during the period of Japanese rule. Construction of the modern airfield began in 1954, and the facility was renamed Ching Chuan Kang Air Base on 20 March 1966. During the Cold War, the installation served as a support base for the United States Taiwan Defense Command. United States Air Force (USAF) use of the facility began in 1958 and included the deployment of tactical fighter, reconnaissance, and airlift wings. The base also hosted Strategic Air Command tankers and served as a depot support facility for theater-based tactical airlift. U.S. personnel withdrew from the installation in April 1979.
The base is currently operated by the ROCAF and shares facilities with Taichung International Airport. It hosts the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing, which operates squadrons of AIDC F-CK-1 Ching-kuo fighter aircraft. Stationed units include the 7th Tactical Fighter Squadron, the 28th Tactical Fighter Squadron, and the War Research Evaluation Center. Support components include the 3rd Maintenance and Supply Group, the 3rd Base Service Group, and the 3rd Military Police Squadron. Air defense is provided by the 795th Air Defense Missile Brigade, specifically the 63rd Battalion equipped with MIM-104 Patriot missiles. The base is also utilized by the Republic of China Army airborne and special operations command and hosts the AH-1W attack helicopters of the 602nd Brigade.
