Description
Decimomannu Air Base is an Italian Air Force installation located five kilometers north of Decimomannu in the Province of Cagliari, Sardinia. The facility is situated between the municipalities of Decimomannu, Decimoputzu, San Sperate, and Villasor. It is named in honor of Colonel Giovanni Farina.
The site was established as a military airfield on 3 June 1940 with the arrival of the Italian 32º Wing. During World War II, the base hosted the 36º Wing, which operated Savoia-Marchetti SM79 and SM.84 bombers between 1941 and 1943. Following the Armistice of Cassibile in 1943, the United States Army Air Forces assumed control of the base, operating P-40 Warhawk fighters and B-26 Marauder medium bombers of the 320th Bombardment Group until September 1944. In 1957, the Royal Canadian Air Force established an Air Weapons Training Installation (AWTI) at the site. A 1959 agreement between Italy, Canada, and West Germany regulated the joint use of the base and its associated firing ranges.
The Italian Air Force is currently the primary operator of the facility. Since 1979, the base has served as a NATO training installation for Dissimilar Air Combat Training (DACT) involving various fighter aircraft. It was formerly the home base for the Taktisches Ausbildungskommando der Luftwaffe Italien until the German Air Force ended operations at the site in 2016. Since July 2022, the base has hosted the International Flight Training School. Operational infrastructure includes equipment for air combat maneuvering instrumentation to support range activities.
