Description
Latina Air Base is located near the city of Latina in the Lazio region of central Italy, south of Rome. The facility was established as a military airfield during the pre-war era, following the founding of the city (then Littoria) in 1932 during the reclamation of the Pontine Marshes.
The Italian Air Force operates the base, which houses the 70° Stormo (70th Wing). This unit is responsible for Phase 1 of the Italian military pilot training curriculum, which concludes with the Airplane Pilot License (BPA — Brevetto Pilota d'Aeroplano). The 70° Stormo conducts screening and basic flight instruction for all Italian military pilot candidates, including cadets from the Air Force Academy. Following completion of training at Latina, pilots proceed to the 61° Stormo in Galatina for Phase 2 training.
The base hosts a fleet of T-260B aircraft, the military designation for the SIAI-Marchetti SF-260EA piston-engine trainer. The facility provides the infrastructure for the initial phase of the Italian Air Force pilot training pipeline.
