Description
Kakaydy Air Base, also known as Kokand or Kokaydy, is located approximately 40 kilometres northeast of Termez, Uzbekistan.
During the Soviet–Afghan War between 1979 and 1989, the installation operated as a Soviet Air Force base, servicing up to 80 military aircraft simultaneously. It housed the 115th Guards Fighter Orshansky Order of Kutuzov and Alexander Nevsky Aviation Regiment (115 GIAP). In 1988, the regiment began transitioning to MiG-29 aircraft, recording its first flights on the airframe in March 1989.
In 1992, the 115th GIAP transferred to Uzbekistan. The Uzbek Air Force subsequently redesignated the unit as the 61st Fighter Air Regiment (61 IAP). Around 2001, elements of the Russian Air Force's 186th IShAP operated Sukhoi Su-25 aircraft from the facility, principally in relation to Afghanistan.
