Description
Chirchik Air Base is a combined air and ground military facility located in Chirchiq, Uzbekistan, approximately 40 kilometers from Tashkent. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the installation and its resident units were integrated into the newly formed Uzbek Air Force. Between September 1992 and May 1993, helicopter units from Chirchiq deployed during the Tajik civil war to engage rebel forces in Tajikistan.
In 1993, the Uzbek Armed Forces reorganized its aviation assets, merging the base's 372nd Separate Instructor Assault Aviation Squadron with the 136th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment to form the 59th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment, which was stationed at Chirchiq. The following year, the 399th Separate Helicopter Regiment based at the facility was redesignated as the 66th Separate Helicopter Regiment.
The base is operated by the Uzbek Air Force and currently hosts the 66th Separate Helicopter Regiment. The unit operates Mi-8 Hip, Mi-24 Hind, and Mi-26 Halo helicopters. Additionally, the facility retains a number of stored Su-17 airframes in poor condition.
