Description
Kubinka is an air base located in Moscow Oblast, Russia, approximately 5 km northwest of Kubinka. The facility is operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces and is also used as an aeroclub for training civilian pilots. The base was built in 1935 and has been in continuous use since then. Historically, the 82nd aviation detachment arrived at the base in 1935, followed by the 11th and 24th Aviation Regiments in 1938.
These units were involved in field-testing aircraft such as the Yak-1 and LaGG-3 fighters and participated in the defense of Moscow during the Second World War. After the war, the 324th Svirskaya Fighter Aviation Division was stationed there from November 1945, and later the 9th Fighter Aviation Division from February 1951. Most units at Kubinka were subordinated to the Special Purpose Command of the Russian Air Force until 2009–2010.
Units currently or previously stationed at Kubinka include the 237th Centre for Display of Aviation Equipment (237 TsPAT), which has flown aircraft such as MiG-29E, Su-17C, Su-24, Su-25, and Su-27, and was renamed from the 234th in 1992. Other units include the 234th Guards Instructional Interceptor Aviation Regiment (234 Gv IIAP) flying MiG-23MLD and MiG-29 aircraft, and the 378th Independent Composite Aviation Squadron (378 OSAE) flying Mil Mi-8 helicopters. The 32nd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment was based at Kubinka from 1950 to 1962–63 and again after its deployment to Cuba as part of Operation Anadyr, flying MiG-19s and later MiG-21F-13s, before being disbanded in 1989. The air base has been used for demonstration performances at festivals and special events. On August 17, 2021, a prototype Il-112V crashed near the airfield, resulting in three fatalities. On May 7, 2025, the air base experienced fires due to a Ukrainian drone attack.
