Description
Plovdiv Airport is located in Krumovo, 6 km southeast of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Civil aviation at the site originated in 1928 with test flights connecting Plovdiv to Sofia, Yambol, and Burgas. Regular civilian service was established in 1948, coinciding with the activation of the Fifth Air Regiment at the facility. In 1962, airport operations were temporarily moved to Graf Ignatievo Airbase to allow for infrastructure restructuring. A new terminal building opened in 1965, and the tarmac was enlarged in 1966. During the 1970s, the airport supported cargo operations involving Ilyushin Il-18, Antonov An-12, and Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft. Domestic scheduled flights were terminated in 1980.
The facility is currently operated by Plovdiv Airport JSC. It functions as an alternate airfield for Sofia Airport and handles international passenger traffic and seasonal charter flights. The western section of the airport houses the 24th Helicopter Air Base of the Bulgarian Air Force.
The 24th Helicopter Air Base operates units equipped with Eurocopter AS 532, Mil Mi-24, Mil Mi-17, and Bell 206 helicopters. Infrastructure includes a 6,750-square-meter passenger terminal commissioned in 2009. This facility contains 10 check-in desks and three gates, with a capacity to process 1,000 passengers per hour. The apron includes six aircraft stands added during the 2009 reconstruction. Historically, the facility has supported heavy transport aircraft, including the Ilyushin Il-76. Located adjacent to the military airbase is the Aviation Museum Plovdiv, which maintains a collection of aircraft from the Bulgarian Kingdom, the Cold War, and the modern era.
