Description

Skrydstrup Air Base is located in southern Jutland and is the installation for Fighter Wing Skrydstrup of the Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF). The base was established in 1943 by the Luftwaffe as Fliegerhorst Hadersleben, a component of the Atlantic Wall. Originally designed to host Heinkel He 177 bombers and Messerschmitt Bf 109 or Focke-Wulf 190 fighters, it was instead utilized by smaller units during the German occupation. Following the war, the facility was used as a camp for German refugees. In 1953, the RDAF expanded the airfield to facilitate jet aircraft operations.

The installation hosts F-35A Lightning II fighters, which transitioned to the site in September 2023. Fighter Wing Skrydstrup is organized into three groups: Wing Staff, Operations Group, and Maintenance Group. Resident units include Squadron 727. Previous aircraft hosted at the base include the F-16 Fighting Falcon, which arrived in 1980, and the F-100 Super Sabre, which replaced F-84G Thunderjets in 1961.

The air base occupies 838 hectares and shares infrastructure with Vojens Airport. Operational history includes aircraft deployments for Operation Allied Force, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Unified Protector, and operations against ISIS.
