Description
Sliač Air Base, historically designated as Letisko Tri Duby, is situated in central Slovakia between Zvolen and Banská Bystrica. During the 1944 Slovak National Uprising, the airfield served as the primary base for the Slovak Insurgent Air Force and facilitated Soviet and United States logistics and evacuation flights. The facility was renamed Sliač in 1945. Between 1968 and 1990, the base was occupied by Soviet Union fighter-bomber and surveillance units. During the Cold War, the airfield hosted multiple aircraft types, including the MiG-15, MiG-19, Su-7, MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-29, and Su-22.
The installation is operated by the Slovak Air Force and serves as the garrison for the 81st Wing Sliač. Since October 2021, the base has been closed to civilian traffic and is reserved for military use. As of 2024, the airfield is under reconstruction. The facility supports transport operations, including LM-100J aircraft flights originating from Ramstein Air Base.
Infrastructure at the site includes an asphalt runway and facilities for fighter and transport units. The base has hosted Slovak Air Force MiG-29A fighters and has functioned as a deployment site for Patriot surface-to-air missile systems.
