Description
The BZK-005 is a medium-altitude, long-range reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed by Harbin Aircraft Industry Group. The aircraft was first publicly displayed via video and models at the 2006 Zhuhai International Airshow.
The aircraft has a length of 9 meters, a wingspan of 19 meters, and a maximum takeoff weight of 1,250 kg. It operates at a cruising speed of 150 to 180 km/h, with a service ceiling of 8,000 meters and an endurance of 40 hours. The design incorporates stealth features, an under-body electro-optical sensor system, and a large upper body dome believed to house a satellite data link antenna. An upgraded variant observed in 2021 is speculated to feature an undernose synthetic aperture radar (SAR) radome, potentially housing a Ku-band D3010 SAR system with dual-mode ground moving target indicator capability, alongside a mid-mounted ventral electro-optical/infrared turret.
In its baseline reconnaissance configuration, the BZK-005 is unarmed and has a payload capacity of 150 kg. The BZK-005C variant is modified with an optimized aerodynamic structure and electronic systems to support strike operations, carrying a payload of over 300 kg of bombs or missiles. The export-variant BZK-005E has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,500 kg and a 370 kg payload capacity.
The BZK-005 is operated by the People's Liberation Army Air Force (84 units) and the People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force (21 units). The Chinese military deploys the UAV for maritime surveillance, including missions over the East China Sea where a BZK-005 was intercepted by the Japan Air Self-Defence Force in April 2019. In August 2011, a BZK-005 crashed near Xingtai in Hebei province.
Export customers include Garuda Indonesia, which acquired three units in 2019 for cargo operations between outlying islands, and the Mauritania Islamic Air Force, which received eight BZK-005E units in June 2024. The Sudanese Rapid Support Forces are also alleged to operate the type.
