Australia Army

The Australian Army operates under the Chief of Army, with operational and administrative command distributed across Headquarters 1st Division, Forces Command, the 2nd Division, Army Aviation Command, and Special Operations Command. Operational deployable command resides with Headquarters 1st Division, based at Enoggera Barracks in Brisbane. Regular force combat power is structured into specialized brigades: the 3rd Brigade in Townsville functions as an armored brigade, the 1st Brigade in Darwin operates as a light littoral brigade, the 7th Brigade in Brisbane serves as a motorized brigade, and the 10th Brigade in Adelaide provides long-range fires and air defense. Reserve units are organized under the 2nd Division across regional commands. Main garrisons include Lavarack Barracks in Townsville, Robertson Barracks in Darwin, Gallipoli Barracks in Brisbane, and facilities in Adelaide.

Land combat assets cover armored, mechanized, motorized, artillery, air defense, and aviation capabilities. Armored units operate M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks alongside M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicles and M1074 Joint Assault Bridges. Mechanized and motorized infantry units field AS21 Redback infantry fighting vehicles, Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles, M113AS4 armored personnel carriers, Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicles, and Hawkei light protected vehicles. Artillery formations operate M777 towed howitzers, AS9 Huntsman self-propelled howitzers, and M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems. Ground-based air defense is provided by National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System batteries. Army Aviation Command operates AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters, UH-60M Black Hawk utility helicopters, and CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift transport helicopters.

Operational responsibilities focus on territorial defense, security across the Indo-Pacific littoral approaches, amphibious operations, and coalition expeditionary missions. The force holds combat experience from deployments in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Middle East, alongside regional security and stabilization missions in the Solomon Islands, East Timor, and Papua New Guinea. Modernization programs prioritize long-range strike, littoral maneuver, and sovereign industrial assembly. Domestic production and assembly programs produce or support the AS21 Redback infantry fighting vehicle and AS9 Huntsman self-propelled howitzer in Geelong, the Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle in Ipswich, and Bushmaster and Hawkei vehicles in Bendigo. Foreign acquisitions include M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, air defense missile batteries, AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, and UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters.
