Overview
The South African Army, the land warfare branch of the South African National Defence Force, is administered through specialized operational formations headquartered in Pretoria. Combat and support arms are organized into the South African Army Armour Formation, Infantry Formation, Artillery Formation, Air Defence Artillery Formation, Engineer Formation, and Intelligence Formation. Operational deployments are coordinated through formations including 43 South African Brigade and 46 South African Brigade. Primary training facilities include the South African Army Combat Training Centre located at Lohatla in the Northern Cape.
Armored units field Olifant Mk 1B and Mk 2 main battle tanks alongside Rooikat wheeled armored reconnaissance vehicles. Mechanized infantry units deploy Ratel infantry fighting vehicles in multiple configurations, including variants armed with autocannons, anti-tank guns, and anti-tank guided missiles. Motorized and light infantry units utilize mine-protected vehicles such as the Casspir, Mamba, and RG-31. Artillery units employ G6 Rhino self-propelled howitzers, G5 towed howitzers, and Bateleur multiple launch rocket systems. Air defense units operate Starstreak surface-to-air missile systems and twin anti-aircraft guns paired with fire control radars. Tactical air transport and close air support for ground operations are provided by the South African Air Force using Atlas Oryx utility helicopters and Denel Rooivalk attack helicopters.
Primary operational missions of the land force comprise border safeguarding along national frontiers and domestic support to civil authorities. Overseas deployments have included peace enforcement and counter-insurgency operations under regional mandates. Elements of the army served in the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique and the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo prior to regional mission drawdowns.
Force development plans are guided by the South African National Defence Force Long-Term Capability Development Plan. The central ground equipment acquisition initiative, Project Hoefyster, was established to replace the Ratel vehicle fleet with the Badger infantry fighting vehicle, a localized variant of the Patria AMV produced by Denel Land Systems. Current modernization efforts focus on extending the service life of existing artillery and armored platforms while integrating unmanned aerial vehicles and mobile surveillance systems for border security.
