The Russian Project 20120 Sarov and the North Korean Sinpo-class (Gorae) operate as single-hull experimental testbeds designed to validate asymmetric nuclear delivery systems. While neither vessel functions as a frontline combatant, both serve as the foundational architecture for their respective navies' next-generation strategic deterrence platforms.

Development and Design

Sarov began construction in 1989 as a modified Kilo-class hull, suffered a post-Soviet funding halt in 1998, and was completed in 2008 by Sevmash. Naval engineers inserted an auxiliary reactor section behind the sail, extending its length and displacing 2,300 tons. The Sinpo-class emerged at the Sinpo South Shipyard in 2014. Propulsion and Performance

Sarov utilizes a hybrid system combining a conventional diesel-electric plant with a Kristall-27 auxiliary nuclear reactor. This reactor generates electricity to recharge the battery banks, eliminating the need to snorkel and granting the acoustic profile of an electric drive with the underwater endurance of a nuclear attack submarine. Sinpo relies on a conventional diesel-electric drive, yielding a submerged speed of 10 knots and a limited range estimated at 1,500 nautical miles. Its dependence on snorkeling restricts its survivability in contested waters.

Deployment and Combat Record

Assigned to the Northern Fleet, Sarov conducted the first at-sea drops of the Poseidon UUV, confirmed by US intelligence in 2016 and Russian Ministry of Defence footage in 2019. This validated the launch mechanics for the Belgorod and Khabarovsk-class submarines. The Sinpo-class boat, 8.24 Yongung, executed North Korea's first successful SLBM launch in August 2016, firing a KN-11 500 kilometers into the Sea of Japan. In March 2023, it fired two submarine-launched cruise missiles during a naval drill.
