North Korea's Sinpo class (8.24 Yongung) and China's Type 032 (Qing class) operate as dedicated diesel-electric trials platforms for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs). They execute identical primary functions: validating sea-based nuclear weapons and generating telemetry data before these systems are integrated into operational fleet submarines.

Development and Design

Built at the Sinpo South Shipyard and observed in 2014, the single-unit Sinpo displaces approximately 2,000 tons submerged with a 67-meter hull. The design leverages structural concepts from older Yugoslav submarines and North Korea's heavily modified Romeo-class inventory. China's Type 032, commissioned in 2012 from the Wuhan Shipyard, displaces 3,797 tons with a 92.6-meter hull. Hull 201 replaced the obsolete Type 031 (Golf class). • The Sinpo contains one to two launch tubes. It initially tested the Pukguksong-1 (KN-11) SLBM and later modified its payload configuration to launch the smaller Hwasong-11S ballistic missile and land-attack cruise missiles.
• The Type 032 carries at least one large-diameter ballistic missile tube, which the PLAN modified in 2017 with an elevated rear sail to accommodate the intercontinental-range JL-3 SLBM. It also retains standard 533mm torpedo tubes.

Sensor suites on the Sinpo are assessed as legacy Soviet-derived sonar arrays. The Type 032 utilizes modern PLAN bow and flank sonar arrays directly ported from the Yuan class, providing higher acoustic resolution during test sorties.

Propulsion and Performance

Both platforms utilize diesel-electric propulsion. The Sinpo achieves 16 knots surfaced and 10 knots submerged, with a maximum unrefueled range of roughly 1,500 nautical miles. Its acoustic signature remains high due to rudimentary machinery isolation. The Type 032's specific range and speed data are restricted, but its Yuan-class lineage dictates modern MTU-derived diesels, anechoic tiling, and better acoustic dampening. Neither vessel conducts extended deterrence patrols; their endurance parameters are scaled for localized weapon trials.

Deployment and Combat Record

Neither submarine has engaged in combat operations. The 8.24 Yongung executed North Korea's first successful SLBM launch on 24 August 2016, firing a KN-11 500 kilometers into the Sea of Japan. It conducted subsequent test launches in October 2021 and March 2023. The Type 032 finalized the testing program for the JL-2 SLBM, which currently arms the PLAN's operational Type 094 SSBNs, and executed the initial three test launches of the next-generation JL-3 SLBM starting in 2018.

At nearly twice the displacement of the Sinpo, it provides a stable, modular hydrodynamic platform capable of validating full-sized intercontinental ballistic missiles using modern acoustic baselines.
