HK G28

Heckler & Koch developed the G28 designated marksman rifle from the civilian MR308 semi-automatic rifle. The development fulfilled a requirement by the German Bundeswehr for a designated marksman platform during deployment to the War in Afghanistan, following the temporary use of the HK417 under the G27 designation. In October 2017, Heckler & Koch renamed the weapon system as the HK241, though the German military retains the G28 designation.

The G28 is a semi-automatic weapon system utilizing a short-stroke gas piston and rotating bolt mechanism, sharing parts interchangeability with the HK417. The upper receiver is manufactured from steel rather than aluminum alloy. The rifle incorporates STANAG 4694 NATO Accessory Rails, which maintain backward compatibility with STANAG 2324 and MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rails. Standard configurations include the G28 E2 Standard and the G28 E3 Patrol, which utilize specialized Schmidt & Bender PM II telescopic sights.

The German Bundeswehr adopted the G28 for service in Afghanistan. Other international operators include the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Special Forces Group, South Korea's 707th Special Mission Group, and military and law enforcement units in Portugal and Indonesia. The United States Army procured a lighter variant of the G28, designated as the M110A1. This variant is deployed as the Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System, featuring an aluminum upper receiver, Geissele handguard, and Schmidt & Bender optics, and as the Squad Designated Marksman Rifle, equipped with a SIG TANGO6 telescopic sight for infantry squads. The United States Marine Corps also selected the system to replace the M110.
