Description

The development of the QSZ-92 semi-automatic pistol began following a 1987 decision to replace the Type 54, Type 64, and Type 77 pistols. Research and development commenced in 1992, with design work starting in 1994 under Liu Ming of the Small Arms Research Institute and Qing Shangsheng. Manufactured by Chongqing Changfeng Machine Manufacturing Ltd, the pistol completed development and was adopted for service in 1998.

The QSZ-92 utilizes a short-recoil, locked-breech operating system featuring a rotating barrel lock, which rotates during recoil to unlock the barrel from the slide. The receiver consists of a polymer grip frame housing a detachable steel insert that contains the fire control group. It features a double-action/single-action trigger with a combined manual safety and decocking lever. The forward portion of the frame is designed as an accessory rail to accept tactical lights, laser sights, or the QUS-181 suppressor, which mounts directly to the rail due to the rotating barrel mechanism. The weapon feeds from dual-column, staggered-feed box magazines. A star engraving is present on the grip of certain models to identify the ammunition configuration.

The pistol entered service with the People's Liberation Army in 1998, and was subsequently adopted by the People's Armed Police and the People's Police. International military and law enforcement users include Bangladesh, Cambodia, Iraq, and South Sudan. In July 2024, the Hong Kong Police Force selected the CF98A and CS/LP5 variants to replace its service revolvers and detective pistols. Standard domestic variants include the base QSZ-92, the redesigned QSZ-92G with updated ergonomics, and the QSZ-92A, QSZ-92B, and sub-compact QSZ-193 platforms showcased in 2021. Export models produced by Norinco include the CF98, the updated CF98A, the NP42, and the compact CS/LP5. Foreign production models include the Bangladeshi BOF Type 92 and the Iraqi Babylon, which is manufactured by the Defence Industries Commission with foreign technical assistance.
