Missile Sky Flash
Description
The Skyflash originated from a requirement in the late 1960s to develop an inverse monopulse seeker for the US AIM-7E-2 Sparrow. Air Staff Requirement 1219 was issued in 1972 under project code XJ.521. The missile entered service in 1978.
The weapon is a medium-range air-to-air missile utilizing semi-active radar homing. It features an inverse monopulse seeker, which provides resistance to electronic countermeasures and allows for target engagement at low altitudes. Testing demonstrated the ability to intercept targets flying at 75 meters and drones at 1,000 feet. The missile is equipped with an active radar fuze and solid propellant rocket motors. Later versions, designated as the 6000 series, transitioned from a boost-and-glide flight profile to a boost-sustain-glide profile to extend flight duration. A proposed variant, the Skyflash Mk 2, was designed with an active radar seeker and inertial mid-course update capability, though it was not adopted for service. The airframe was designed for carriage in semi-recessed wells on the aircraft fuselage to minimize drag. On the Tornado ADV, hydraulic trapezes were used to deploy the missile into the slipstream before motor ignition to maintain stability during the launch sequence.
The missile was operated by the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Italy, and Sweden, where it was produced under license as the Rb 71. In British service, the missile was initially deployed on the F-4 Phantom and later on the Tornado ADV. It was typically carried alongside short-range missiles such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder or ASRAAM. The system was phased out of service by 2006, having been replaced by the AIM-120 AMRAAM.
