HM Naval Base Gibraltar (HM Dockyard, Gibraltar)

His Majesty's Naval Base Gibraltar is the Royal Navy's shore establishment in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, at the western approach to the Strait of Gibraltar. It supports the permanently based Gibraltar Squadron and acts as a staging and replenishment point for British and allied warships transiting between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and for units deploying east of Suez or to Africa. The base houses The Tower, headquarters of British Forces Gibraltar, the tri-service command that operates all Ministry of Defence establishments in the territory and reports to Cyber & Specialist Operations Command. Command of British Forces Gibraltar has been held by Commodore Tim Davey since June 2026.

The Gibraltar Squadron is homeported at the base and operates Cutlass-class patrol vessels, which replaced the earlier Archer-class boats in 2021–22, together with Pacific 24 rigid-hulled inflatable boats, a Sea-class diving support boat and a quadcopter reconnaissance UAV team drawn from 700 Naval Air Squadron. Diving platforms and harbour work boats support squadron tasks. The River-class offshore patrol vessel HMS Trent has deployed intermittently from Gibraltar since April 2021. Royal Navy personnel assigned ashore number a few dozen, with additional crews attached to Trent. Windmill Hill Signal Station, at the southern end of the peninsula, is used by the Royal Navy to monitor maritime activity in the Strait.

The dockyard retains ship repair and docking capacity and regularly berths visiting British and allied warships and support vessels. Ordnance is held at the Armaments Depot, Gibraltar, under Defence Equipment and Support. The King's Lines Oil Fuel Depot, built for the Royal Navy in 1954 and excavated within the Rock, has storage for 250,000 tonnes of fuel but has been out of use for many years. RAF Gibraltar, at the northern end of the territory, has no based aircraft but supports regional operations. The Gibraltar Defence Police, a Ministry of Defence civilian force operating patrol boats and RHIBs, is headquartered at North Gate House inside the naval base.

HM Dockyard, Gibraltar operated from 1895 to 1984, when Ministry of Defence surface fleet reductions rendered it financially unviable; it passed to the A&P Group and traded briefly as Gibrepair from 1985. British forces in the territory had been naval-led since the 1890s until Rear Admiral Geoffrey Biggs, the last Flag Officer Gibraltar, struck his flag in 1992 and the tri-service British Forces Gibraltar was formed.
