UK Naval Support Facility Bahrain (HMS Jufair)

The United Kingdom Naval Support Facility (UKNSF), also referred to as HMS Jufair, is a Royal Navy shore establishment at Mina Salman Port in the Juffair district of Manama, Bahrain. It provides logistic, accommodation and berthing support to British warships operating in the Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and adjacent waters, and can accommodate up to 500 Royal Navy personnel on a site of about 10 acres.

The facility is the garrison of the UK Maritime Component Command, the Royal Navy's operational headquarters for the region, and has hosted the 9th Mine Counter-Measures Squadron. It has served as the home port for vessels assigned to Operation Kipion, the standing British maritime security commitment in the Gulf covering the protection of oil and trade traffic. Ships permanently stationed at the base included Sandown- and Hunt-class mine countermeasures vessels and the Bay-class landing ship dock RFA Cardigan Bay, which acted as mine countermeasures mother ship; a general-purpose frigate was also maintained in the region. These assignments were progressively withdrawn: Cardigan Bay returned to the United Kingdom for refit in 2024, HMS Bangor in 2025 and HMS Middleton in 2026, since when no vessels have been permanently assigned. The Gulf frigate presence was ended at the close of 2025 with the decommissioning of HMS Lancaster. Autonomous mine countermeasures systems have been trialled from the base, including the unmanned minehunter RNMB Harrier, which arrived in February 2023 for hot-weather trials operating from RFA Cardigan Bay.

The base occupies part of the wider Mina Salman commercial port. The UKNSF quayside initially took only the small mine countermeasures vessels assigned to Bahrain, with larger units berthing at other piers in the port. A quay refurbishment completed in June 2020 allowed Type 23 frigates and Type 45 destroyers to lie alongside within the base. The shallow draught of the port prevents the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers from berthing at the facility, though they can use its support services while at anchor nearby.

A Royal Navy base opened at Mina Salman on 13 April 1935 as HMS Jufair. The United States Navy leased space from 1950 and took over the entire site on Bahraini independence in 1971, operating it successively as Administrative Support Unit Bahrain, Administrative Support Unit Southwest Asia and Naval Support Activity Bahrain. In December 2014 the United Kingdom announced the reestablishment of a permanent naval base at Mina Salman; construction began in October 2015 and the UK Naval Support Facility was opened on 5 April 2018.
