HMAS Creswell

HMAS Creswell is a Royal Australian Navy training establishment on the shores of Jervis Bay, in the Jervis Bay Territory, Australia, situated at Captain's Point between Jervis Bay Village and Greenpatch. The site is owned by the Department of Defence and is closed to the public.

The establishment houses the Royal Australian Naval College, the RAN School of Ship Survivability and Safety, the Beecroft Weapons Range, an administrative support department, and the Australian Navy Cadet unit TS Jervis Bay, which operates from the western end of the base. As of January 2025 the Commanding Officer is Captain Joanne Haynes.

The Royal Australian Naval College is the service authority for basic and leadership training of RAN officers. Its principal course is the 15-week New Entry Officers' Course, taken by direct entry and graduate entry officers and by candidates proceeding to the Australian Defence Force Academy. Trainees without university education or holding a three-year degree enter as midshipmen; those with more education or prior experience enter as sub-lieutenants, lieutenants or chaplains. Under the Naval Officer Year One scheme, introduced in 2000, midshipmen bound for ADFA complete NEOC and, in the case of junior warfare and supply officers, initial phases of their application courses before entering the Academy. Instruction covers drill and ceremonial, proficiency on the F88 Austeyr, physical training, RAN history, sea survival, sea combat survivability, naval weapons and technology, seamanship and boatwork, leadership and command, and service organisation. The course includes a one-week sea familiarisation period and a four-week Sea Training Deployment aboard a major fleet unit. On completion, officers move to other establishments for primary qualification training, junior warfare officers to HMAS Watson and electronics engineering, marine engineering and supply officers to HMAS Cerberus. The College also runs the residential component of the Reserve Entry Officers' Course, the Junior Officers' Leadership Course, the Junior Officers' Management and Staff Course, and a one-week residential Undergraduate Entry Officers' Course.

The RAN School of Ship Survivability and Safety, about 3 km south of Creswell, is the Navy's primary chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence and damage control training facility in eastern Australia. It operates two firefighting training units and a floodable mock-up of ships' compartments known as Counter-Sink. The Beecroft Weapons Range, on Beecroft Head, is a live fire range used for naval gunfire support training.

The Naval College moved to Jervis Bay on 10 February 1915, with the main college buildings completed that year. It relocated to Flinders Naval Depot in 1930 for cost reasons and returned to Captain's Point in 1958, the establishment being commissioned as HMAS Creswell after Sir William Rooke Creswell, First Naval Member of the Naval Board from 1911 to 1919.
