HMAS Watson (HMAS Radar)

HMAS Watson is a Royal Australian Navy training establishment at South Head, adjacent to Watsons Bay, on the southern side of the entrance to Sydney Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. It forms part of Fleet Base East and is owned by the Australian Department of Defence. The base is commanded by a Royal Australian Navy captain and has a ship's company of about 300.

The establishment is the RAN's principal maritime warfare training base. It delivers post-entry training for maritime warfare officers in navigation, ship handling, tactics, weapons and sensors, and category training for combat system operator and electronic warfare sailors. Watson also conducts command training for newly promoted commanding and executive officers. It is the parent base for RAN personnel undertaking studies at Sydney universities. The base has no fleet units homeported at it; its function is instructional rather than operational, with training in torpedo and anti-submarine warfare conducted there alongside the maritime warfare syllabus.

The Royal Australian Navy established training facilities at South Head in 1942, when the radar school was transferred there from HMAS Rushcutter and operated under the name HMAS Radar. The establishment was commissioned as HMAS Watson on 14 March 1945, taking its name from Watsons Bay. Torpedo and anti-submarine warfare training moved to the base in 1956, and by 2011 Watson had become the RAN's main maritime warfare training establishment.
