Description
Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek–Fort Story is a United States Navy installation at Virginia Beach, Virginia, on the southern shore of the Chesapeake Bay at its Atlantic entrance. It falls under Navy Region Mid-Atlantic and is commanded by a Navy captain, with an Army lieutenant colonel serving as deputy commander and Army garrison commander.
The Little Creek portion is the principal operating base for the expeditionary forces of the United States Navy's Atlantic Fleet. The installation as a whole comprises four locations across three states and close to 12,000 acres of real estate. The Little Creek site at Virginia Beach accounts for about 2,120 acres. Outlying holdings include some 350 acres immediately north of Training Support Center Hampton Roads in Virginia Beach and 21 acres at Radio Island, Morehead City, North Carolina, the latter used as an amphibious embarkation and debarkation point for United States Marine Corps units from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
The Fort Story portion occupies Cape Henry, at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, and covers 1,451 acres. Its terrain combines dunes, maritime forest, cypress swamp, open ground and both soft and hard sand beaches, with wide, gently sloping beaches on the Chesapeake Bay side and exposed Atlantic surf on the eastern side. Deep-water anchorage and variable tide conditions are available offshore. The site is used for Army amphibious operations training and for Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) exercises.
The joint base was established on 1 October 2009 under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process, merging the Army post at Fort Story with Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek under Navy command; the two components are retained as sub-installations.
