Naval Station Newport (Newport Training Station)

Naval Station Newport is a United States Navy installation on the west coast of Aquidneck Island in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, spanning land in the city of Newport and the towns of Middletown and Portsmouth, together with the northern third of Gould Island in Jamestown. The station covers about 1,063 acres. Its principal function is professional military education and training rather than fleet support; it provides the facilities and infrastructure used by tenant commands and visiting fleet units.

The station hosts the Naval War College, the Surface Warfare Officers School, the Naval Justice School, the Navy Supply Corps School, the Senior Enlisted Academy, the Naval Academy Preparatory School, and the Center for Service Support. Accession and commissioning training is conducted by Officer Candidate School, Officer Development School and the Direct Commission Officer Indoctrination Course. Other Navy tenants include the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a detachment of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 2, Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron 8, the 7th Naval Construction Regiment, Navy Operational Support Center Newport and Navy Band Northeast. Marine Corps Detachment Newport is co-located. Naval Health Clinic New England provides medical support.

The pier facilities hold inactive ships and berth United States Coast Guard and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration units. Coast Guard vessels assigned there include the coastal buoy tender USCGC Ida Lewis and the seagoing buoy tenders USCGC Juniper, USCGC Sycamore and USCGC Oak, alongside a Coast Guard electronics support detachment at Castle Hill and a maintenance augmentation team. NOAA operates the fisheries survey vessel NOAAS Henry B. Bigelow from the station and is building a new Atlantic Marine Operations Center there. Bulk fuel storage is concentrated in tank farms in the Melville area and at Midway, with Defense Fuel Support Point Melville overseen by the Defense Logistics Agency.

The Navy Department established the Newport Training Station in 1883, training initially afloat and moving ashore by 1887; the station expanded onto Coddington Point during the First World War. It served as a fuel depot from 1900 into the mid-1970s and was homeport of Cruiser-Destroyer Force Atlantic until that command moved to Norfolk in the early 1970s. BRAC 2005 added more than five hundred billets and returned Officer Candidate School and the Navy Supply Corps School to Newport.
