Description
Canada named ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems the preferred supplier under the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project on 6 July 2026, opening negotiations for up to 12 Type 212CD boats to replace the four ageing Victoria-class submarines. The German design was chosen over Hanwha Ocean's KSS-III Batch II, which remains the reserve option should talks fail. Ottawa aims to conclude a contract by the end of 2027; price, delivery sequence, Canadian industrial workshare, training, infrastructure, sustainment, intellectual property and weapons integration all remain to be settled. The air-independent-propulsion boats are designed for under-ice operation, a requirement driven by Arctic sovereignty patrols.
