Royal Saudi Navy

The Royal Saudi Navy is the naval branch of the Saudi Arabian Armed Forces and is one of the key players in the maritime security landscape of the Middle East, particularly in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. Established in 1960, it has since undergone several phases of modernization and expansion. With a strategic focus on securing vital sea lanes and protecting the Kingdom's maritime interests, the Royal Saudi Navy plays a pivotal role in regional security.

From an equipment standpoint, the Royal Saudi Navy possesses a variety of modern naval assets, including frigates, corvettes, patrol boats, and auxiliary ships. One of the most noteworthy classes is the Al Riyadh-class frigates, which are French-built and based on the La Fayette-class. These are complemented by the Spanish-built Avante 2200-class corvettes delivered between 2022 and 2023, with three more ordered in December 2024, the older Badr-class corvettes and an array of fast patrol boats. The navy is also in the process of acquiring newer vessels, such as the multi-mission surface combatant ships from the United States, to modernize its fleet further.

When it comes to capabilities, the Royal Saudi Navy is primarily geared towards anti-ship and anti-submarine warfare, coastal defense, and search and rescue operations. While the navy has taken part in various international exercises and has deployed on peacekeeping missions, its primary focus remains localized to the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent waters.

In terms of manpower, the Royal Saudi Navy is estimated to have around 13000 personnel. The navy has two main operational fleets, with the Western Fleet based in the Red Sea and the Eastern Fleet operating in the Arabian Gulf. Both fleets are supported by various naval bases, including King Abdulaziz Naval Base in Jeddah and Jubail Naval Base in the Eastern Province. These bases serve as hubs for logistical, maintenance, and operational tasks, enhancing the navy’s capacity to project force and respond to regional crises.
