Navy of El Salvador

The Salvadoran Navy is a specialized and agile force primarily oriented towards maritime security and sovereignty patrols within its territorial waters and economic zone. Its core maritime strategy revolves around combating transnational organized crime, with a pronounced emphasis on counter-narcotics operations, which it often conducts in close cooperation with the United States. This focus shapes its capabilities and operational tempo, prioritizing the interdiction of illicit trafficking along its Pacific coastline. The Navy's mandate also includes supporting ground forces, maintaining internal peace, and providing national disaster relief.

The fleet is composed of patrol vessels, coastal surveillance craft, and high-speed interceptors designed for rapid response. Its operational reach extends up to the 200 nautical mile limit of its claimed maritime territory, focusing on law enforcement and sovereignty enforcement. While not possessing a large blue-water combat capability, the force is effective in its designated security role. A key element of its evolving capability is the integration of unmanned systems. Through joint exercises with the U.S. Navy, El Salvador is advancing its use of unmanned aerial and surface vehicles to enhance maritime domain awareness and extend its surveillance range, allowing for more effective tracking and interception of threats with reduced risk to personnel.

The Salvadoran Armed Forces are undergoing a period of modernization under the "Plan Control Territorial," which includes acquiring new equipment such as drones and advanced cameras that benefit naval operations. The Navy itself demonstrates a degree of self-sufficiency through its own maintenance and repair facilities. These installations are capable of servicing a variety of vessels, including fishing boats and yachts, and perform tasks such as hull work, sandblasting, painting, and engine maintenance.
