PSMM-5-class

The PSMM-5 class (also designated as the PSMM Mk5) is a class of multi-purpose patrol gunboats originally designed for the United States Navy based on the Asheville-class gunboat. Shipyards involved in the construction of the PSMM-5 class included the Tacoma Boatbuilding Company in the United States, Korea Tacoma Marine Industries Ltd. in South Korea, and China Shipbuilding Co. in Taiwan. The gunboats were operated by the Republic of Korea Navy, the Republic of China Navy (Taiwan), the Republic of Indonesia Navy, and the Kingdom of Thailand Navy.

In its baseline configuration, the PSMM-5 class utilizes a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion system. This system consists of two GM 12V149 TI-type diesel engines producing 5,400 hp for cruising and a single Lycoming TF-40A gas turbine producing 15,000 hp for high-speed operations. The ships are equipped with the Honeywell/Hughes H-930 (Mk 93) Mod 2 combat system. Standard armament includes four Hsiung Feng or Exocet MM-38 anti-ship missiles, one 76 mm cannon, and one Bofors 40 mm/70 Mk 10 gun.

The Republic of Korea Navy operated nine vessels of the PSMM-5 class. The first, PGM-351 Paek Ku 51, was followed by PGM 581 Paek Ku 52 and PGM 582 Paek Ku 53, both delivered on 14 March 1975. PGM 584 Paek Ku 55 and PGM 585 Paek Ku 56 were delivered on 1 February 1976. The remaining four units, PGM 586, PGM 587, PGM 589, and PGM 591, were built locally in South Korea.

The Republic of China Navy operated two vessels: Lung Chiang PGG 601, delivered on 15 May 1978, and Suijiang PGG 602, which was built in Taiwan.

The Republic of Indonesia Navy acquired four units built in South Korea by Korea-Tacoma in Masan, designated as the Mandau-class: KRI Mandau (621) and KRI Rencong (622) in 1979, followed by KRI Badik (623) and KRI Keris (624) in 1980. These vessels feature a propulsion system consisting of two MTU 12V diesel engines and one LM 2500 gas turbine. Sensor and electronic warfare systems include a Racal Decca 1226 radar, Signaal WM-28 and Selenia NA-18 fire control systems, and a Thompson-CSF DR-2000S Mk1 intercept system. Armament consists of four MM38 Exocet surface-to-surface missiles, a 57mm/70cal dual-purpose gun, a Bofors 40 mm gun, and two Rheinmetall 20 mm guns.

The Kingdom of Thailand Navy operated six vessels built locally in Thailand as the Sattahip-class: PC 521 Sattahip (1983), PC 522 Klongyai (1984), PC 523 Takbai (1984), PC 524 Katang (1985), PC 525 Thepa (1986), and PC 526 Thai Muang (1986). These patrol boats are powered by a diesel-only system with two diesels. Armament consists of one 40 mm gun, two 20 mm guns, and two 12.7 mm machine guns, with PC 521, PC 522, and PC 523 additionally carrying a 76 mm OTO dual-purpose gun.
