United States Air Force F-16C Crash

A United States Air Force F-16C of the 8th Fighter Wing crashed into the Yellow Sea during a training flight from Kunsan Air Base. The pilot ejected about nineteen minutes after takeoff and was recovered by South Korean forces in stable condition. The accident investigation found that a failure of the embedded GPS and inertial navigation system disabled the attitude indicator, and that a low cloud base left the pilot without primary flight instruments and spatially disoriented. A second Kunsan F-16 was lost into the same waters weeks later, prompting scrutiny of the wing's accident rate.
