Description
Chagan Air Base, also known as Dolon Air Base and Semipalatinsk-2, was located in Semipalatinsk (modern Semey), Kazakhstan. Built in the 1950s, the facility operated as a Soviet Long Range Aviation bomber base. In 1955, it was one of six Soviet installations equipped to handle the Myasishchev M-4 bomber.
The 79th Heavy Bomber Aviation Division was established at the facility in 1957. This division comprised the 1023rd and 1226th Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiments. Command of the 79th transferred from Long Range Aviation (1957–1960) to the 8th independent Heavy Bomber Aviation Corps, later the 30th Air Army (1960–1980), and finally to the 37th Air Army (1980–1992).
From 1957 until 1992, the two regiments operated variants of the Tupolev Tu-95, including the Tu-95, Tu-95M, Tu-95K, and Tu-95MS. Until at least 1980, the installation functioned as one of three bases for the Soviet Union's Tu-95 long-range bomber fleet. In 1990, the base housed 40 Tu-95 aircraft. Base infrastructure included tarmac space and over 50 revetments. Dolon Southwest, a former airfield 32 km to the south, operated as a probable dispersal field.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan assumed control of both regiments in 1992, and the aircraft were withdrawn to the Russian Federation. By 1994, the Tu-95 aircraft were eliminated from the site, ceasing its strategic bomber operations. The airbase was abandoned in the 1990s.
