Description
Edwin Andrews Air Base is a Philippine Air Force installation located in Zamboanga City, Philippines, co-located with Zamboanga International Airport. The facility is operated by the Philippine Air Force to conduct air operations against insurgent groups, including the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
Units stationed at the base include the 3rd Air Division, Tactical Operations Group 9, the 206th Tactical Helicopter Squadron, the 25th Composite Attack Squadron, the 4223rd Supply Distribution Squadron, and the 1306th Dental Dispensary.
The facility was originally constructed as San Roque Airfield by George L. Saludo Jr. and was later renamed Moret Field after U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Paul Moret. On March 15, 1945, U.S. Army airfield construction units and Filipino forces upgraded the airfield to support combat operations against Japanese forces. Following World War II, control of the facility was transferred to the Philippine Government, functioning as a public airport. On December 6, 1956, a military airbase was established at the site and renamed Edwin Andrews Air Base in honor of General Edwin Andrews, the first post-war Commander of the Philippine Air Force.
