Description
Elefsina Air Base is a Hellenic Air Force installation at Elefsina, Greece. Military aviation has operated from the site since 1937, and the airfield in its current form opened in 1946. During the Battle of Greece in 1941, Elefsina was used in the final British evacuation from the country.
The base is the home of the 112th Combat Wing (112 Πτέρυγα Μάχης), which groups the Hellenic Air Force's transport and search and rescue squadrons: the 352 VIP Transport Squadron, formed in 1957; the 354 Tactical Transport Squadron, formed in 1970; the 355 Tactical Transport Squadron, formed in 1947; the 356 Tactical Transport Squadron, formed in 1953; the 358 Search and Rescue Squadron, formed in 1958; and the 384 Search and Rescue Squadron, formed in 2006. Approach control for Elefsina is handled by the Athens Control Centre, as for the other airfields in the Athens area.
