Description
Jehonville Air Base, also known as Bertrix Air Base, is a NATO reserve airfield located four kilometers north of Bertrix, Belgium. Constructed in 1958 to support NATO force dispersal requirements, the airfield became operational on August 29, 1958, with aviation operations commencing on December 31, 1958.
The base was assigned to No. 422 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) 1 Canadian Air Division under NATO plan MC 60. The RCAF used the site as a Deployed Operating Base, initially operating Canadair Sabre aircraft before transitioning to the Canadair CF-104 Starfighter in 1963. Following France's withdrawal from the NATO Military Command Structure in 1966, the RCAF ceased flying operations, reduced its on-site security detachment, and returned the airfield to the Belgian Armed Forces.
The Belgian Air Force operates the installation. While the airfield lacks regular daily flight operations, it is home to the Belgian Air Cadets. Current flight activity primarily consists of aviation training operations, including night helicopter flights and tactical landing operations for Airbus A400M Atlas military transport aircraft.
Infrastructure at the installation includes an ammunition depot located on the eastern side of the base. The United States Army constructed the depot in 1991 and transferred it to the Belgian Armed Forces in 1994. The depot is managed by the nearby 260th Ammunitions Company. A military railroad connects the base directly to the Belgian national rail network.
