Description

Koksijde Air Base is a Belgian Air Force facility located in Koksijde, two kilometers north-northwest of Veurne, Belgium. During World War II, the installation was operated by the German Luftwaffe. In 1942, Luftwaffe aircraft operating from the base provided fighter cover for the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, alongside the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen, during their transit from Brest, France, through the English Channel to Germany.

The base is currently operated by the Belgian Air Force and hosts the 40th Heli Squadron. This unit operates NH90 NFH helicopters, which replaced the squadron's previous fleet of Westland Sea King Mk.48 and Aérospatiale Alouette III aircraft beginning in March 2012. During weekends, the installation is available to private recreational aviation.

Base infrastructure includes static display airframes consisting of ex-Belgian Air Force aircraft, specifically a Hawker Hunter F.4 and Sikorsky S-58C helicopters utilized as gate guards and exhibition assets.
